CS2 skins

Case opening

Also known as: Opening cases

Case opening is the process of opening a virtual CS2 case to receive a random skin from a predefined pool with public probabilities. Cases can be purchased within the game on Steam or on external third-party platforms offering their own inventory, mechanics and prices. It is one of the most popular mechanics in the CS2 ecosystem and supports an entire industry of dedicated platforms.

Context

Official CS2 cases are opened with a key that costs real money and have probabilities documented by Valve. External case-opening sites offer their own cases — often with larger prizes or higher probabilities of expensive skins — and usually operate in jurisdictions with their own regulatory frameworks. In many countries, external case opening occupies a legal grey area between regulated gambling and a straightforward marketplace: classification depends on whether cases can be redeemed for real money or only other skins.
