Upgrade
Also known as: Upgrades, Skin upgrade
An upgrade is a mechanism on external platforms in which users stake a skin (or combination of skins) against the chance of receiving a higher-value skin. The favourable-result probability relates to the price ratio between the staked and target skins: moving from €10 to €100 usually gives a probability close to 10%, minus platform fees. It is a gambling mechanic, not a commercial exchange.
Context
Unlike Valve’s official trade-up (deterministic within collection probabilities), an external upgrade is purely binary: either you receive the target skin or lose the staked skin. Most upgrade platforms disclose the multiplier and exact probability, and those that do not should be treated cautiously. From a regulatory perspective, upgrades sit closer to case opening and skin gambling than traditional marketplaces, so regulated-gambling classification varies by jurisdiction.
